The current president of Brazil, Lula, was sentenced to 8 years and 10 months in prison in 2019.
He is only free because a supreme court minister (who was placed there by Lula's party) said that the state in which he was tried was wrong...
That he should have been tried in São Paulo, instead of Paraná.
He managed to be elected in 2022, due to the great manipulation made by the mainstream media in Brazil, which repeatedly said that Lula was innocent and attacked Bolsonaro on a daily basis.
On July 12, 2017, Sergio Moro, then a federal judge of first instance, sentenced Lula to nine years and six months in prison for the crimes of passive corruption and money laundering in the criminal action involving a triplex in Guarujá. In the second instance, the sentence was increased to 12 years and one month. Then, on April 5, Moro issued the arrest warrant. In April 2019, in a unanimous decision, the 5th Panel of the STJ upheld Lula's conviction and reduced the sentence for passive corruption and money laundering from 12 years and 1 month to 8 years and 10 months in prison.

This show how badly the *democracy* (or lack of it) is in Brazil right now ...
